Madness

This is not a psychotic breakdown; it’s a cleansing moment of clarity.

-Howard Beale

Have you ever had a cleansing moment of clarity? I feel like I just have.

Television is not the truth. Television is a goddamned amusement park.

-Howard Beale

It’s true. I’ve said it so many times. Info-tainment. That’s what we call it. We all know that’s what it is. That’s what we are. That’s what I am.

I smile when I hear that a girl gets gang raped. Why? Because it’s my job. When someone is murdered, I smile. When a politician is corrupt, I smile. There are two reasons I smile and one reason I come home and cry at night.

I smile because it’s my job. My job is to push ratings. Bring in viewers. Increase revenue. The numbers are god and I pray daily and make my sacrifice. The awful things that happen in this world have become entertainment. People can sit back at home and hear about all the crazy, fucked up shit that happens and be entertained by it. Even sadness can be entertaining.

My sadness comes from taking part in it all. From training myself to automatically remove my emotions from what happens and think only of promoting the show. Did you know it’s much easier to write a tease about something dramatic and depressing than it is something uplifting? It’s easier to grab a viewer’s attention with something horrific than it is with something good.

Tonight at nine, a horrifying ordeal for a 14 year old girl, beaten and raped, left for dead in a ditch… How she managed to survive… coming up!

or…

Tonight at nine, against all odds and three degrees later, a local man is the first in his family to graduate from college… How he managed to beat the odds and come out on top… coming up!

Be honest, which story are you going to watch? Why do you think crime shows are doing so fucking well? The Discovery Channell is like watching an endless run of forensics labs flashing in front of you on some goddamn light up display.

I cry myself at sleep tonight because I don’t feel human. To deal with the shit I have to hear about at work, I have to turn off my conscience and my emotion. I can’t afford to empathize with the victim or I can’t entertain people with it. I think that’s sad. A man shouldn’t have to do that to survive.

I’m sorry, I just watched “Network” and it’s really gotten to me. Everything I’ve ever hated about my job has just come rushing into the forefront of my thoughts. That movie voiced everything I hate about television and the modern world and the movie did it much better than I ever could have.

I’m not sure she’s capable of any real feelings. She’s television generation. She learned life from Bugs Bunny.

We’ll tell you anything you want to hear, we lie like hell.

-Howard Beale

You’re beginning to believe the illusions we’re spinning here, you’re beginning to believe that the tube is reality and your own lives are unreal. You do. Why, whatever the tube tells you: you dress like the tube, you eat like the tube, you raise your children like the tube, you even think like the tube. This is mass madness, you maniacs. In God’s name, you people are the real thing, WE are the illusion.

– Howard Beale

It’s all nonsense and it won’t stop until all of you stop watching it.

I’m going to try and find another way to make a living now because I’m mad as hell and I don’t have to take it anymore!

Good night.
