My name is Kip Gordon and I’m a photographer, graphic artist, television producer, independent film maker (isn’t everyone these days?), all around righteous dude, and now also a bakery manager. I live and work in Memphis, Tn.
I like interesting retro glassware, old leather chairs, Buddha statues and grass in my toes. I’m rather fond of my cameras and good food.
I grew up in Memphis and other than a brief stint in Los Angeles, I’ve been here my entire life. I went to a local private high school for boys and well, let’s just say everyone was glad that I graduated. After that I went on to attend the University of Memphis where I didn’t graduate. Let’s just say we had a difference of opinion… I later attended Southwest Tennessee Community College but again decided it just isn’t for me.
During college I started working in the studio at WKNO. I fell into this after doing theater in high school and my first year of college. I learned so much working there and owe my career to them. I started making some short movies and gradually learned to shoot, light, floor manage, mix/edit audio, and direct. This lead to a job at FOX13 where I produced promotional spots as the Senior Promotions Producer. While at FOX I won four Regional Emmy Awards and was a part of winning numerous PROMAX awards including one that was named number three in North America behind the Desperate Housewives Campaign and the Winter Olympics Campaign. Below is the spot that won…
And here’s the Emmy that came along with it…
The other Emmy was awarded for this spot…
And here is me winning it…
In the summer of 2010 I left FOX13 to work full time managing my sister’s bakery, Muddy’s Bake Shop, which is in East Memphis behind Clark Tower. Yes, that was a shameless plug but hey, you gotta support family, right? Seriously though, go get a cupcake. You won’t regret it. I promise you. When I’m no helping make delicious baked goods I can often be found hanging with my friends, taking beautiful photographs around town, building random things like chairs, working on my car, or just sitting in my yard drinkin’ a scrumptious home brew beer that I’ve made.
So, I guess that about sums it up. I work a lot and didn’t do well in school but, it’s paid off. Cool. Now go look at my pictures some more. I pity the fool!
Here’s a quote that I rather like:
“Wilde Weste Roughing It, motoring friends,
But Sanitized jake seas
Ammonia pucks in every urinal
We aim to keep your Wilde Weste Sani-pure-
Who won the West?
Antisepsis did, I guess.”
-Tom Wolfe, “The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test”
The older I get the more disappointed I become by the world. I think this quote sort of sums up what I see happening. There are no frontiers left. Everything is safe. Everything is sanitized. Newspapers, websites, conversation, religion, television, movies, even art (sometimes). I think that if there is a “Wilde Weste” anymore it’s to be found in the internet. So, I’ve recreated my blog, newer, better than ever! Something like that.
“The more I see of the world, the more I am dissatisfied by it.”
-Jane Austin from Pride and Prejudiced
“For what do we live, but to make sport for our neighbors, and laugh at them in our turn?
-Pride and Prejudiced
